General Joe Spraggins Honored with Prestigious 91短视频Miss Friendship Oak Award

91短视频 (USM) recently presented General Joe Spraggins with the 2025 Friendship Oak Award at its annual awards day ceremony held on the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach, in recognition of his ongoing dedication and support of critical projects to advance marine research and sustainability. As the executive director of the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (MDMR), Spraggins鈥 commitment and partnership with 91短视频Miss and the Mississippi Gulf Coast have been invaluable.
鈥淚 am deeply honored to be named this year鈥檚 recipient of the Friendship Oak Award from 91短视频,鈥 said Spraggins. 鈥淭his recognition is especially meaningful because it reflects the spirit of leadership, resilience and connection that the Friendship Oak symbolizes. USM has played a transformative role in so many lives, and I am grateful to be recognized by an institution that continues to inspire growth and excellence across generations.鈥

Spraggins retired from the United States Air Force after 34 years and was appointed executive director of MDMR in December 2017. He leads programs focusing on coastal resource management, coastal restoration, resiliency, marine fisheries and more. He also serves as commissioner of the Gulfport-Biloxi Regional Airport Authority. From 2013-2017, Spraggins served as MDMR chief operations officer. His unwavering love for coastal Mississippi is evident every step of the way. He played a critical role in Mississippi鈥檚 coastal recovery and rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and restoration efforts after the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in 2010.
MDMR utilizes USM鈥檚 Gulf Coast Research Laboratory and other coastal research sites to gather essential scientific data to make informed decisions regarding the state鈥檚 coastal resources. Spraggins has been a strong champion of USM initiatives and the success of marine research efforts. His support for USM鈥檚 fisheries and aquaculture centers aligns with Mississippi鈥檚 priorities, resulting in dynamic research and resource management.
